My husband and i signed a lease on a private home a few weeks ago. We've been renting for years and are fairly use to the process. However, the landlord is new to the renting game. He has never been a renter or a landlord and his inexperience is shining through. We paid the broker fee and one month security at signing. We also acquired the necessary renters insurance as required by our lease agreement. Most of the home was recently updated except the range. We are avid cookers and asked if it would be possible to switch out the range ourselves and hold on to the one that is there to change back when we leave. This was agreed upon and was written into the lease. At first the landlord seemed very reasonable. He said that if we wanted to move a few things in ahead of time that would be fine since move in date fell mid week when we were working. After we purchased our stove we decided to take the landlord up on his offer. He let us in to store the stove/range. He was allowing us to come in before the move in date to install it. We called in the beginning of the week to see when we could get in and the landlord responded with "I'll have to consult with my eternities and get back to you". When he got back to us he said that since we are storing on his property he would like us to start paying rent! Then he said that if we want to come in the weekend before move in date to start ,which is two days before the move in date , he will require a weeks more rent! We in no way think he's obligated to extend any courtesies by allowing us to move some things in the weekend before but we were not asking out of the blue...simply taking him up on his offer. Not to mention he took our money, our property and is now holding it and trying to use it to get more cash out of us. Also, my boss called me to tell me that the landlord called her to follow up on her reference and with out getting into to much detail told me that his questions were bordering on inappropriate. We think the landlord may have been offered more money from someone else or maybe having second thoughts about renting the home in general , but whatever the case we are feeling a bit uncomfortable. The landlord will not return our calls. We decided to give up on getting in to install and left a message saying that we are fine moving in on move in date but to please call us back to arrange a time and place to meet the night prior or the morning of to pay first months rent and get the keys. Its been days and still no call back and he will not answer. Is there anything he can do to keep us from moving in at this point? I can't see how. We've met all our financial requirements , we have not done anything to go against the lease, all access to our financial status was given before they called us into sign the lease. We've given notice to out current landlord and i think that he has someone moving in the week after we move out. Instead of feeling relieved to find a whole private home i'm feeling nervous about leaving my cramped apartment
